Turning 65 – when do I sign up?

Your Medicare Part A will start automatically the first of the month that you turn 65 as long as you’ve paid into Medicare for at least 40 quarters or 10 years. You may also qualify through a spouses benefits.

You may apply for Medicare Part B up to 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after the month of your 65th birth date. This is your initial enrollment period.

If you wait longer than 3 months after the month you turn 65 you will have to apply durning your General Enrollment Period. This period starts January 1st and lasts until March 31st. Your coverage would then start July 1st.

In the case that you are still working and wait until after 65 to get on Medicare because you have insurance through work you may sign up any time as long as you have a plan with “creditable coverage” and are leaving that employer plan or retirement plan. Your coverage would start the 1st of the month after your current plan ends.
